Summer 2004 - The internship months

Due to the generosity of a certain unnamed friend of mine, I was able to land a wonderful summer internship with a major German company from May to July.  The position would be in Munich and it would give me my first taste of the German corporate world.  While I must admit I was a little nervous at first about the job, I quickly grew to learn the ropes and had a great time.  Not to mention that I met some truly great people in the process!

The pictures below are of my time in Munich.

Me shortly after my arrival in Munich being greeted by the soothing sounds of a rolling summer thunder rainstorm.  As the summer progressed I started wondering if the clouds and rain would ever blow away. . .

"You decide!  Don't give clones a chance!"

Green Party political advertisement against Bush.  My thumbs-up symbolizes my agreement with the sign but also my support of the United States.  Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too!

Another overblown political sign against the Bush Administration: "The sleeping of Europe births monsters.  Support Lyndon LaRouche, the conscience of the true America.  Stop the Neocons!"

So dramatic. . .

Me in front of my favorite German high speed train, the ICE (InterCity Express).  It's lookin' a little dirty today, though.

Me at the Munich City Hall "Rathaus" in Marienplatz!

Eastern area of Marienplatz

Above and below: frozen silver pantomime in Marienplatz

A German speaking American unicyclist who had the group howling with his performance.

Just some guy painted gold hanging around on Kaufinger Street.

Above and below: nice images of the Frauenkirche Church from Kaufinger Street.  I just LOVE all these German flowers everywhere.  I think the world could learn a lot from German aesthetics.

Frauenkirche Church.  The tilted right tower is a result of Photo Shop, not some scary construction mishap!

Gray Danny in front of the ol' Church.  It's not a particularly hot pic of me, but I figured the cathedral looked cool enough.

Tilted picture of the moon along the wall of the Frauenkirche.

Me, my iPod, and Feldherrn Hall in the background while on a little walkabout downtown.

Yes, yield signs do look the same the world 'round.  That is, in case you were wondering.  That aside, there is a decent example of contemporary German architecture behind it.

German gas prices that would make America want to fight a 3rd war in the Persian Gulf.

Diesel: $4.59 a gallon.  Regular: $5.56 a gallon.

Super: $5.70 a gallon.  Super plus: $5.89 a gallon

Most of that cost is from government taxes, mind you.

Below: me walking around the Hofgarten with a bunch of pink flowers photographed for my mother.  (She likes flower pictures by the way.)

For mum!

The Monopteros in the English Garden.

To the right of this monument, and not shown, is the nudist colony section of the park!

My jobsite this summer.

"Fire department driveway"

Me flashing my pearly whites to a cool coworker of mine at a company party.

The view out my 6th floor (5th floor in Europe) apartment.

Above: me with the leg of a rainbow disappearing behind me.

Below: a monster sized full rainbow over Munich

Above: Me being a freak at a beer garden along the Isar River in Munich.

Below: some of my favorite license plates trolling around Germany.  The first two letters signify the town that the car is registered in, and the second one, well, I have no idea!

Worry not: license plate digits have been changed to protect the owners' privacy, except partially in one case. . .

While in Munich, two friends from grad school in California who were also working in Germany/Austria came to visit me in Munich and we proved to be as silly abroad as we are back home!

Daniel secretly plants money on the subway platform.

"Elaina, look!  5 euros lying on the ground!"

Oh no!  An oncoming train!

Oh sooooo tempting!  ;-}

Elaina sexually harassing me on the U3 subway train.  "Can I please just make one single call without any smootchy distractions?!?"  ;-}

Me proving how in love we are with one another.

Me thoroughly in love with a cup of cappuccino in Marienplatz downtown.

Oh this picture just makes me HUNGRY!

To hell with low carbs and low fat, I say!

I WANT TASTE, DAMN IT!

Above and below: Elaina attacking me in front of my beloved, well-photographed German road signs.

"Parking in [blue] denoted areas allowed - with parking permit on workdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m."

Elaina, does this interest you in the slightest?!

A typical yummy German breakfast with fresh baked breads, meats, cheese, tomato and avocado.

Above and below: yummy Turkish food for dinner.  Yes, we took pictures at the table in the middle of the restaurant!

Mmmmmmm. . . YUM!

Ugh. . . not so yum!

Dirty old plates next to my head at the Hofbraeuhaus beer garden in downtown Munich.  More beer and tourists under one drunken roof than should be legal!

Me, Paul, Gesine, and my friend Amy from Los Angeles at the Hofbraeuhaus.  Note the size of the mugs.  And these ain't no sissy watered down Bud Lights neither!

Gesine and Amy having fun playing around with Gesine's new digital camera.

Photographing the local Bavarians. . .

Awe!  Sweet Gesine!

Smile!

"Let's erase that one!"

Above and below: the clan feasting, and then the clan walking it off in the subway.

All roads lead out of Germany, and one to the airport to my flight back to California.

Bye bye, Germany!

Flying over northern Canada.

Spectacular view of the great unfreezing North.

Me in Seat 58K @ 38,000 ft.

America straight ahead!
