June 2004

In June I decided to take a little two-hour jaunt up to Nuremberg (aka Nurnberg/Nuernberg) and visit two friends of mine from graduate school who were also spending their summers in Europe.  I visited Nuremberg back in 1994 with my father once before, but it was nice to visit again 10 years on.

Proof that I brush my teeth before I go on vacation!

Schöner Brunnen - Beautiful Fountain

Beautiful artesian well fountain constructed between 1385 and 1396; stone pyramid with 40 figures.

Walking up to the Imperial Castle from a roundabout back entrance, stopping by the Hexenhausla (Little Witch's House) cafe along our way.

"Vier Zucker!  Vier!" (inside joke)

We got to sit in a tiny sitting room recessed into an obscure corner of the cafe far, far away from other guests in a room titled "The Witch's Hole" (Hexenloch)

Random green curtains on the metal and glass window letting a tiny amount of light into the Witch's Hole.

Platz am Tiergärtnertor - Square at Tiergärtnertor

Group of medieval half-timbered buildings including the Dürer House and the Pilatus House.

Walking up to Kaiserburg - the Imperial Castle, which contains living quarters, the imperial hall, knights' hall, and a Romanesque double chapel.  The Kaiserburg-Museum is now located here.

Interesting work of art downtown

The Bratwurst House of Sausages!  YUMMY!!!

Look at all those tasty sausages!

Cigarette advertisement on the wall of our hotel: "Finding everything better today than before."  That lady on the left looks like a real firecracker!  And I bet that's not a cappuccino in her cup either!

Leaving Nuremberg.  Munich straight ahead on Highway 9!
