Key West

Key West is a city and an island of the same name near the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The city encompasses the namesake island, the part of Stock Island north of US-1 (the Overseas Highway) (east), Sigsbee Park (north, originally known as Dredgers Key), Fleming Key (north), and Sunset Key (west, originally known as Tank Island). Nearby Wisteria Island (northwest) and Key Haven (northeast) are unincorporated. Both Fleming Key and Sigsbee Park are part of the NAS Key West and are inaccessible by civilians.

Key West is the county seat of Monroe County.GR6

Key West is known as the Southernmost City in the Continental United States. It is also the southern terminus of U.S. Route 1, State Road A1A and the East Coast Greenway.

Key West is 129 miles (207 km) southwest (229.9 degrees) of Miami, Florida,[1] (about 160 driving miles) and 106 miles (170 km) north northeast (21.2 degrees) of Havana, Cuba.[2] Cuba, at its closest point is 98 statute (85 nautical) miles due south.[3]

Key West is a seaport destination for many passenger cruise ships.

Guido and his euro-stance during a stop in Islamorada (eye-la-morada) for lunch.

Having lived in Saudi Arabia for a couple years I thought the name of the town was Islam-Orada, and I thought, "This oughta be interesting."

But upon reading about it in my tourist book, it's pronounced "eye-la-morada" and there was nary a mosque in sight!

Scads of places in Key West are billed as "Southernmost X" or "Southernmost Y".

Technically, the southern most place in any US state is on the Big Island of Hawaii, which I happened to also visit back in January.

Not sure why I took this picture.  Maybe the little kitty on the Coffee & Tea House sign?!

St. Paul's Church

St. Paul's was the first church to be built in Key West.  The original structure was built in 1838 and was constructed of coral rock but the church was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846.  A replacement wooden frame church was built but  destroyed by fire in 1886.  A hurricane again destroyed the structure in 1909.  The current concrete church was constructed in 1919.

Interestingly, the Gulf of Mexico is at one end of Duval Street and the Atlantic Ocean at the other side just a mile or so away.

Believe it or not, I was able to get a bit of a tan after 9 days of non-stop solar exposure on the trip though it may not be apparent here.

I'm sure it'll all disappear within the next few days now that I'm back in San Francisco!

I'm not sure what's more interesting: the pelicans dive bombing fish or the man in the background watching?

Any guesses on why they call it the Seven Mile Bridge?
