Basically: swimmers beware!

Rex Lookout on our way up to Port Douglas

Yes, crossing highways can be treacherous.  Heads up, tourists!

If you get hit here, you really have only yourself to blame!

Our room in Port Douglas where we stayed for two nights.  Very spacious!

Apparently "Pokies" means gambling in Australian?

Lest the religious forget!

Walking through the greenery of Mossman Gorge

I wonder what I'd feel if I stuck my hand in here?!

A pleasant little creek at Mossman Gorge

Me at Mossman Gorge

The slow moving waters of Mossman River.  Presumably they rage during tropical downpours and cyclones.

The thin, spindly trunk of a tropical tree.  Really fascinating!

39 clicks away from Cape Tribulation. . . but first we'll have to cross Daintree River by ferry.

Parked on the ferry crossing the Daintree River

Looking toward the wooded shore of the Daintree River.  Might there be crocodiles in those waters?!?

Note the absence of a steering wheel on Amy's side of the car!

Above: the little hook of land known as Cape Tribulation.  We almost tried to book a hotel in this area when we were making reservations for Port Douglas.  Fortunately we decided to stay a little closer to civilization and booked at the Port.  Otherwise those tropical evenings would have been most solitary!

One of the MANY uninhabited beaches between Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation

Amy and I along the Australian coastline

Low tide along a desolate beach in northern Australia

Driving out to Cape Kimberley - a detour off the main road on our way up to Cape Tribulation

Consider yourself forewarned!

I.e. your dog might be eaten by crocs!

The low tide expanse of beach at Cape Kimberley.  Nary a human in sight!

Interesting little formations in the sand as the tide pulled further offshore.

Little sand balls along the beach of Cape Kimberley.

Me, the sun, Cape Kimberley and not a whole lot of much else - just how I wanted my vacation!

Amy and I along the Australian coast

Me playing with a coconut (palm tree nut??) at Cape Kimberley on a brief pit stop on our way to Cape Tribulation

Posing with a giant palm tree seed. . .

Would these be considered coconuts?  I wonder if they're edible??

What happens when gravity takes over

Apparently coconut farming is serious business!

A stop in the Daintree National Park

What an amazing tree trunk and set of roots!

Elevated wooden walkway in Daintree National Park

A terrifyingly huge guest perched in the corner of the outhouse bathroom in Daintree National Park.

YUCK!!!

Presumably he thinks I'm just as ugly as I think he is!

Cassowary crossing!

Fascinating, rope-like, twisting vines dangling from a tall tree in the national park

Oh look!  There I am peeking out from behind a tropical tree!

Mosaic picture showing the long, spindly trunk fingers of a tropical tree in the Daintree National Park

A large blue fruit lying on the forest floor which is apparently a favorite of cassowaries.

Cassowary turned speed bump.  Watch out!

Finally - arrival at Cape Tribulation!

. . . and there ain't a whole lot here!  ;-}

Cape Tribulation

BAD BAD things live in the water here!!!

What a great sign!  English, German and Sino-Japanese readers beware!  Everyone else: you're on your own!

Cape Tribulation

Walking along the beach at Cape Tribulation during low tide in an area that looks very friendly toward crocodiles!

The spindly arcing roots of walking trees perched atop the beach at Cape Tribulation

Walking among the roots wasn't particularly easy!

Roots, tree trunk, branches and foliage all above ground.

How interesting that there's nearly as much tree below the trunk as there is above!

Solar collectors above and nutrient absorbers below.  Nature is amazing!

Cape Tribulation

Try running through THAT!!!

I'd hate to be chased by a crocodile through there in the presence of a little bit of water. . .

Me in front of the walking trees

Wet strings of sand ejected from beach crabs as they filter the coastline for food.

What I thought was my first cassowary up close and personal but what, in fact, turned out to be an Australian Brush Turkey.

Close, but no cigar!

These twisty vines are really spectacular!

Watch your head lest you conk yourself out cold on a hard, twisty vine!
